GREEN DOOM PROJECT
I created a fictional company to do design work for, Green Doom, a group of environmental mercenaries. Their design work should have an underground theme, to be reproduced through graffiti stencils, stickers, t-shirts and posters. I kept the color scheme basic with the idea that these designs would all need to be reproduced quickly and cost effectively. I wanted each piece to stand on its own as identity for the company because the nature of the company leads to using a single identity piece over and over being a problem.
GD LOGO
The logo had to serve two purposes: corporate identity for the business end of the company and serve as a tag to claim responsibility for the actions of the company. The earth serves as something that is instantly recognizable and the color shifting around the letter s ‘GD’ makes them pop out around that well. The presentation of something everyone recognizes in a slightly different way works effectively here.
GORILLA TACTICS
This poster was part of a targeted campaign that the company might try, in this case saving silver back gorillas. As either a standalone poster/tag or in conjunction with the logo, this would serve as a tool to get more people interested in the company, what Green Doom does and what a person could do to help them. Design wise I wanted this poster to stand out regardless of what it was next to, the implied shape of the gorilla, and the ability for the poster to work in positive or negative makes that possible.
TWO .45 CALL TO ARMS
I wanted to do something that grabbed people’s attention and then delivered the message the company had. The guns on the front are about as big as I could get printed on a hoodie, and this plays on society’s obsession with gun culture, either good or bad. The message back is almost never what people expect it to be, and the reactions are usually funny.
I have been asked to print up more of these, but I have to do them in batches to make them affordable. If you’d like one email me so I can let you know when I will be printing. I can print them with or without the words on the back, whichever you’d like.
EMERSON HATES MATH
After doing all the other pieces for this project I thought I should do something that would appeal to a wider audience and something designed from the beginning to be in color. After finding the quote by Emerson I knew I had to make a design based on it. I wanted this piece to be more than it appeared to be the first time you looked at it. The combination of oak tree, and mushroom cloud at the top of the image came out well, I’s not too obvious, but it takes some looking to see it.
DESIGN WORK
This section is for pieces I have done that are part of something larger. When I have it I will post the final product to show how the design was put to use.
JAPANESE SPEAKING CONTEST DESIGN
The 20th annual Arizona Japanese Speaking Contest was looking for designs to put on some of their material, and I was asked to make an entry for it. I wanted to do something that was Japanese and Arizonan at the same time, so I decided to do a painting of the Grand Canyon in the style I had seen many Japanese mountains drawn. I also wanted to incorporate a crane into the piece as well because when researching arts styles I noticed a lot of cranes were included in the foreground of landscape paintings, and it helped balance out the piece a little better.
WEDDING MONOGRAM AND PATTERN
A coworker asked me to design a monogram of her and her fiancée’s initials, SE, for their wedding. After talking with her extensively with her to figure out what kind of feeling she wanted for it, she decided on something organic looking, with imperfections and in earth tones. After that was complete she said she wanted a design that incorporated the monogram.I worked with repeating the design in different ways until i got the pattern here, resembling a Celtic pattern that she liked a lot. These pieces are being used in a variety of different ways for the ceremony.
POSTERS
Lately I have been doing a lot of posters for people and this section will have my favorites. Some of these are for friends, some I have just decided to do on my own and some are parts of projects.
OSCAR GRANT POSTER
I heard about what happened to Oscar Grant on New Year's in Oakland and wanted to make a poster that the people I knew in the area could use to help spread the word about what happened. I used the poster art style to make the picture look iconic in the hopes that it would be around a few places so people ould recognize it. Coming up with the right text took some time, because a lot of people were very mad, which I didn't want to exacerbate, but I wanted it to be strong at the same time. In the end I don't know if it really made it out anywhere, I gave it to some people to use for free but didn't hear back from any of them about it.
